Today we played "Justify", a terminology game that focused on autotrophic and heterotrophic terminology An autotrophic organism is an organism capable of synthesizing its own food from inorganic substances, using light, or chemical energy. Compare this to heterotrophic organisms, which are organisms that cannot synthesize its own food and is dependent on complex organic substances for nutrition.
In Simple Terms:
Autotrophs create their own food through a process called photosynthesis. Since autotrophs can create their own food, they obtain their energy directly.
Heterotrophs need to eat food; they do not have the chlorophyll. Since heterotrophs do not create their own food then they obtain energy indirectly.
What is Chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesize carbohydrates from CO2 and water (H2O). Chlorophyll is green in color due the chlorophyll's inability to absorb light with the green wavelength. Because this wavelength is not absorb, the green light is reflected by the chlorophyll and it is that light your eyes see as green.
Photosynthesis Formula:
Remember this formula since it will be on your test:
Water (H2O) + Light +Carbon Dioxide (CO2) = Oxygen (O2) & Glucose (Sugar)
